Horse-racing: Yes Neighbour Yes can lift Defence Day Cup

By Anwar Zuberi

KARACHI, Sept 5: If form and consistency are any indications of merit, then five-year-old chestnut, Yes Neighbour Yes who is on course for a hat trick, should land the prized Defence Day Cup in the Summer Gymkhana race meeting at the Karachi Racecourse on Wednesday.

Out of seven runs, he has returned with flying colours on five occasions with Mohammad Essa in the saddle. Trainer Sher Mohammad also deserved to be applauded.

Of course there will be challengers and other contenders who will try to obstruct its path to victory but we will name only filly Fantasia and colt King Of Arab and, to some extent, bay horse King Of Sanghar.

Also a feature event, it will be the eighth race in the schedule to be gone over a distance of seven furlongs.

Three-year-old bay colt, Captain Black, is fancied to make it two-in-a-row should he claim the supporting event Ribot Stakes 2006. It is a seven furlongs race reserved for three-year-old horses only.

He will be opposed by filly Eswarah and colt Moon Raker in a short field of six runners.

These two races will be preceded by Kingree Lodged Performance Cup for two-year-old to be contested over four furlongs. Nine runners will go to the starting gate barring last minute withdrawal for their maiden run, hence it’s difficult to predict the outcome.

In all, there are nine races on the day’s card. The first race begins at 12.30 noon.

If all goes well, four-year-old chestnut colt, Silent Angel, is poised to make amends by grabbing the six furlongs concluding event. His likely challengers are bay filly, Queen Of Mirwa and colt, Red Rufus.

Chestnut colt, Sindh Malook, should overcome Trust Again and Arabian Heart to make it two wins on the trot.

Similarly, chestnut filly, Maid’s Causeway seems to be the form horse and should stretch her winning run.

Three-year-old bay colt, Fight For Fame, is our fancy in div III class VII race. Mir Sikandar and Burnish Pride should settle it out for places.

Chestnut, Lucky Five, is expected to dominate the opener while mare, Silent Love, should also edge out Jan-e-Mun and In Her Shoes in her quest to win. The performance of filly, Sea Of Love, should be watched.
