SOUTHAMPTON (England), Sept 5: England all-rounders Jamie Dalrymple and Paul Collingwood gave their side hope of winning their first limited overs match this season with a century stand in Tuesday's day/night third One-day International at the Rose Bowl.
Their fifth-wicket partnership of 101, featuring 62 from Dalrymple and 61 from Collingwood, was the centrepiece of England's 271 for nine after they had been sent into bat by Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul-Haq.
Pace bowler Rana Naved-ul-Hasan led the tourists' attack with four for 57.
Wicket-keeper Chris Read boosted England's total with 21 not out.
England, 1-0 down in this five-match series, have lost all eight of their completed limited overs matches this season.
Earlier, a second-wicket stand of 79 between England captain Andrew Strauss (50) and Ian Bell (42) saw the hosts recover from losing Marcus Trescothick to the first ball of the innings.
Pakistan had an ideal start when Shoaib Akhtar yorked the experienced left-hander, the ball deflecting off Trescothick's pads before knocking over off-stump.
But Strauss and Bell then repaired the damage.
Left-hander Strauss went down the pitch to square cut Mohammad Asif, who took a miserly two for 10 in eight overs in Pakistan's seven-wicket win at Lord's on Saturday, for four.
Then a single off Naved took Strauss through to a 45-ball fifty with eight fours.
But a ball later Strauss saw his policy of going down the pitch prove his undoing when he edged Abdul Razzaq through to wicket-keeper Kamran Akmal.
New batsman Kevin Pietersen, on his Hampshire home ground, could only manage 20 before he nicked Naved to Mohammad Hafeez at point.
England were now 113 for three in the 22nd over as Inzamam brought Shoaib Akhtar back into the attack.
And Shoaib Akhtar then had Bell edging a drive to Hafeez at point to end a 66-ball stay, England 125 for four at the halfway stage of their innings.
There was a worrying moment for Pakistan when Naved, fielding on the fine leg boundary, tumbled as he tried to stop the ball and fell heavily.
He then required several minutes of treatment as he lay flat on his back but Naved eventually returned to the field.
Meanwhile Dalrymple was digging in, as he had often done before in his brief England career.
After he survived an lbw appeal from leg-spinner Shahid Afridi on 13, Dalrymple kept going and a pulled four off Asif took him through to his second fifty at this level, off 69 balls with four boundaries.
But in sight of his One-day International best score of 67, Dalrymple was bowled by Naved's inswinging yorker which knocked over his leg-stump.
Then 226 for five became 229 for six when Rikki Clarke, going forward, effectively yorked himself first ball when he was bowled by Razzaq.
Collingwood then completed a 55-ball fifty with four fours before top-edging a flick off his legs against Naved and being well caught by Shoaib Akhtar.
