KARACHI:Govt gears up efforts towards city uplift


KARACHI, Sept 5: The Steering Committee of the Karachi Mega City Project held its second meeting here on Tuesday with Adviser to the Chief Minister on Finance M. A. Jalil in the chair.

The committee decided to convene a meeting of important departments of the provincial, city and district governments under the chairmanship of Sindh governor at the earliest to chalk out a joint strategy for resolving the problems in the way of making Karachi a modern city.

It was also decided to organise a major seminar on the topic of ‘Karachi Mega City’ for which invitation could be extended to representatives of political parties and private sector organisation to have their views.

Mr Jalil told the meeting that in order to attain the objective, salient features and shortcomings of the world’s major cities should be brought to fore and efforts be made to prevent the drawbacks of foreign cities from being reflected in this project. He pointed out that the Sindh government also wanted to modernise Karachi, as well as other cities of the province.

City Nazim Syed Mustafa Kamal presented the master plan of Karachi and said that it would soon be completed and brought before people.

Mr Jalil gave several suggestions to improve the master plan further, and directed the officials concerned that details of works relating to the Karachi City Mega Project be provided at the next meeting of the Steering Committee, and work on the same be started at the earliest.

He appreciated the efforts put in by officials of the project and asked them to gear up the same further.

Adviser to the CM on Local Government Waseem Akhtar, Additional Chief Secretaries Ghulam Sarwar Khero and Mirza Karim Baig, Project Director KMCP Mohammed Zakir and Project Coordinator Roshan Ali Shaikh were among others who attended the meeting.

EXPRESSWAY: City Nazim Syed Mustafa Kamal has said that the city government has undertaken the elevated expressway project as the first public-private partnership venture.

Speaking at a briefing about the project at a local hotel here on Tuesday, he said that after completion of this 24-kilometre expressway, traffic problem in the city would ease considerably.

He said that the toll tax on this road would be reasonable. He said that ramps would be built at several places along the expressway to facilitate movement of vehicles.

Meanwhile, the city nazim visited various graveyards and asked the Works & Services Department to complete carpeting of all the approach and inner roads. He also asked the KWSB to replace the defective sewerage line passing through the Old Golimar and running into the Mewashah Graveyard within two days.

BACHAT BAZAARS: The CDGK plans to set up model bachat bazaars in different parts of the city to facilitate shopping at reasonable prices in the holy month of Ramazan.

EDO E&IP Syed Abid Ali Shah told a delegation of traders here on Tuesday that commodities would be sold at these bazaars at wholesale rates.

He said that the wholesale rates of vegetables and fruits would be published on a daily basis and a compliant cell of the Consumers Rights Council and the Governor’s House would be set up at Sabzi Mandi.

He said action would be taken against profiteers, especially those selling fresh milk and meat at higher prices, through special judicial magistrates.—APP/PPI
