KARACHI, Sept 2: Unseeded Ronak Mahesh Manuja of India claimed the boys’ singles title when he got the better of unseeded compatriot Chandril Sood in straight sets in the final of ITF Pakistan World Juniors Ranking tennis championship (second leg) at the Islamabad Club on Saturday.
Manuja posted a 6-4, 6-2 victory over his opponent in the 65-minute battle.
Earlier, on course to making it to the final, he had stunned second seed Ryan Cheung 6-3, 6-4 and fourth seed Rahul Balwal 6-0, 6-3.
The boys’ singles crown of the first leg ended in a blaze of glory for Pakistan’s Tanveer Aashiq, a rank outsider, who disposed off fellow countryman Yasir Khan.
Manuja shot into 3-1 lead in the opener but Sood fought back to level 3-3 by breaking the opponent’s game. However, the former went on to win the first set 6-4.
Manuja was aggressive in the second set and build up winning lead of 4-1. He conceded only two points on his way to rounding off the set 6-2.
The two legs of ITF tournament featured 86 boys and 22 girls from Pakistan, Singapore, India, Sri Lanka, USA, Thailand, Finland and Egypt.
Tanveer Aashiq who was ranked 1164th at the beginning of tournament improved his ranking by attaining 654th spot.
