Two sisters raped in custody set on bail

By Our Correspondent

GUJRANWALA, Aug 31: The two sisters who were involved in a dacoity case and raped in custody by some police officials were granted bail by a local court after their six-month detention here on Thursday.

Reports said an FIR was lodged with Satellite Town police about six months back in which the owner of a house, which was looted, alleged that two sisters `S’ and ‘N’, working as housemaids, were involved in the dacoity.

The police arrested the maids, who later alleged that some police officials, including the SHO, assaulted them during investigation. The allegations were confirmed by the medical examination report of the girls.

However, a departmental inquiry absolved the accused police officials of rape charges, against which human rights bodies and lawyers protested.

Later, the then DIG, Zafer Abbas Lak, himself conducted an inquiry into the matter and recorded the statements of the both sisters in jail. The Punjab chief minister and IG also sought report on the incident.

As a result, all the accused police officials, including SHO Arif khan, were found guilty and a rape case was registered against them. They were also suspended from service.

After rejection of their bail applications twice, the both sisters were granted bail by judicial magistrate M. Jehangir Ashref.

RESCUED: The Child Protection and Welfare Bureau claims to have rescued about 100 children from various parts of the city in the month of August.

The press release issued by the bureau here on Thursday said that raiding teams caught these children while begging from Lorry Addas, Rawalpindi By-pass, railway station and other areas.

Around 80 children were handed over to their heirs through courts while four children, being addicts, were shifted to Lahore for treatment. While some 16 children were being provided education and health facilities in the city’s bureau institution.

RECOVERED: An inspection and vigilance cell team, led by in charge SP Dr Shehzad Aslam Siddiqui, raided the Model Town police station and recovered illegal arms, cartridges and hashish from boxes of SI Gulzar Ahmad and ASI Muhammad Khan on Thursday.

Seeing the raiding party, both police officials managed to escape from the scene. The raiding team submitted its report to the IGP recommending action against the absconding policemen.
