MITHI: Rain-hit Tharis await help

MITHI, Aug 31: The naib nazim of Tharparkar district, Mr Abdul Karim Rahmoon, has urged the government to declare those union councils of Thar as calamity hit where heavy rains have wreaked havoc.

Talking to a group of newsmen who were visiting the rain-hit areas with a view to assess damages on Wednesday in the Jese Jo Paar Village, Mr Rahoomo contended that Chhachhro taluka consisted of 17 UCs of which Laplo, Pirane Jo Paar, Parno, Ghadhro, Dahli, Rajoro, Chhachhro, Jese Jo Paar and Khainsar UCs were hit hard by torrential rains.

“The intermittent rains had killed a number of goats, sheeps, donkeys, cows and camels, destroyed thousands of kutcha/pucca houses and damaged crops in these union councils where hundreds of families have been rendered homeless because of damages caused to their houses during rains”, added Mr Rahmoon.

In reply to a question, whether any of the elected representatives or officer had visited the affected UCs, he said these UCs are situated at the north of Chhachhro town near the border with India and in the absence of metalled roads and electricity, no officer or elected representative has bothered to visit the calamity-stricken area which has further developed a sense of deprivation among the affectees.

Answering another question, Mr Rahoomo asserted that the devastating rains have also caused loss to kutcha houses, killed a number of cattle heads and damaged standing crops in parts of Mithi, Diplo, Nagarparkar talukas.

He demanded of the government to direct the relevant functionaries to conduct the survey of rain-related loss in the district, declare such areas as calamity hit.
