KARACHI, Aug 31: The Pakistan Endocrine Society (PES) has stressed the need for recognition of postgraduate training programmes in endocrinology by the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council as well as the College of Surgeons and Physicians (CPSP).
Senior medical professionals and office-bearers of the PES including Dr Abdul Jabbar (AKU), Dr Zaman Shaikh (DUHS), Dr Jamal Raza (NICH) and Dr Khurram Shahid (LNH) in a press conference here on Thursday said indifference of the concerned bodies was enhancing public vulnerability to quacks.
The attitude of the PMDC and CPSP was said to be denying easy availability of qualified and well-trained professionals across the country to treat commonly registered health conditions, related to malfunctioning of hormones.
Dr Abdul Jabbar, PES president answering a query said that any proposition for an “Institute of Endocrinology” could only be materialised once the subject was recognised at academic level.
Mentioning that there were no more than 25 qualified endocrinologists across the country, he said the scenario had prevented a large majority of relevant patients to seek proper medical intervention.—APP
