India may host Special Olympics cricket

NEW DELHI, Aug 30: India is likely to host first ever cricket World Cup in Special Olympics, in Mumbai between Nov 6 and 13. Teams of India, Pakistan, Australia, Bangladesh, England, Afghanistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka and West Indies will take part in the event that would mark official launch of cricket as a sport in Special Olympics.

Former Indian batsman Sunil Gavaskar, who is one of brand ambassadors for the event, said such events should not be seen just as acts of charity as they brought out best of character and endurance in sports.

Organisers stressed on idea behind the event was not segregating differently disabled athletes from regular ones, but put them on same plank.—Agencies
