Nigerian oil unions to go on strike

LAGOS, Aug 30: Nigerian oil unions decided on Wednesday to stage a “warning strike” from Sept. 13 lasting three days to protest against insecurity in the Niger Delta, a union leader said.

Warning strikes typically have no impact on oil output or shipments from the world’s eighth-largest exporter, because key workers often remain at their posts or are replaced by non-unionised staff.

Lumumba Okugba, deputy Secretary-General of the white collar PENGASSAN union, said unions were concerned by a recent increase in violence and kidnappings of workers in Africa’s top producer.

Okugba said that unionists had originally planned to start the action on Wednesday next week but had decided to push back the start date by another week after further discussions.—Reuters
