KARACHI, Aug 28: Pakistan’s Tanveer Ashiq annexed the boys’ singles title in the ITF Pakistan Junior Tennis Championships when he defeated compatriot Yasir Khan in the rain-delayed final on the clay courts of Islamabad Club on Monday.
Tanveer breezed through the first set to win it 6-3. But Yasir made a belated comeback in the second set after trailing 2-5 before winning three successive games to level the score (5-5).
After the second set was tied at 6-all, Tanveer clinched victory by winning the tie-break 7-4.
Meanwhile, it was a bad day for the Pakistanis as 10 of them failed to progress beyond the main draw’s first round of the second leg.
The biggest casualty was sixth seed Tanveer Ashiq, who lost to India’s Shiva Sangwan in straight sets.
Only three home players — Khurram Nazir, Yasir Khan and Omer Babar — qualified for the second round.
