Strike observed in Sindh towns against Bugti’s killing

LARKANA, Aug 28: A complete strike was observed in different parts of Sindh on Monday in protest against the killing of Baloch leader Nawab Akbar Bugti and his associates in Kohlu.
Members of the Bugti Baloch clan living in Sindh expressed anger over the killing of their chief.
Activists of the Jamhori Watan Party, Sindh Taraqi Pasand Party and Awami Tehrik took out processions in several towns.
The Bugtis hailing from Lal Bakhsh, Rohal Khan, Faqeer Mohammed and Rahim Bux villages, located on the outskirts of Larkana city, took out a procession on the Indus highway.
Police intercepted the protesters at the Shaikh Zyed hospital chowk and blocked their entry into the city.
Police resorted to baton charge when they refused to disperse.
Heavy contingents of Rangers were also present on the occasion.
Later, the protesters dispersed peacefully.
Sources said that police picked up nine protestors.
Larkana DPO Irfan Baloch told Dawn that contingents of police were deployed to face any untoward incident.
He said that only three Bugtis were arrested but later they were also released.
Mr Baloch said that the situation in the district was quite normal.
Another demonstration was held at the Jinnahbagh chowk.
Activists of the PPP-SB raised slogans against the government and condemned the Kohlu incident.
Responding to the call of JWP and STP, a complete strike was observed in Larkana.
Main trade centres in the city remained shut.
In Shahdadkot, a complete strike was observed.
A procession was taken out in protest against the Kohlu tragedy.
The protesters carried banners and placards.
They marched on the main roads of the town and burnt tyres.
Later, they assembled at the Koto-Moto chowk and made speeches.
Qambar-Shahdadkot STP president Hayat Tunio, Zahid Magsi and Niaz Chandio condemned the killing of Nawab Akbar Bugti.
STP leaders called for probe into the incident.
In Qambar, activists of the STP took out a procession from Sabzi Mandi and assembled outside the press club.
They chanted slogans against the government and condemned the incident.
JACOBABAD: A complete strike was observed in the city in protest against the killing of Nawab Akbar Bugti.
The call for strike was given by the Sindh Taraqi Passand Party.
Main bazaars and markets remained closed.
The police cordoned off the city area to avert untoward incident.
KHAIRPUR: Jeay Sindh Qaumi Mahaz senior vice-president Mujtaba Shah Rashdi condemned the killing of Nawab Akbar Bugti.
He termed the incident a threat to political and nationalist movements of Sindh and Balochistan.
Talking to reporters, he demanded that provinces should be given full autonomy.
He said that history stood witness to it that leaders of slave nations had been killed in this way.
Sakhi Qabool Mohammad, Sajjada Nasheen of Dargah Sachal Sarmast, also condemned the killing of Nawab Bugti.
NAUSHAHRO FEROZE: Activists of PPP, JSQM, STP, JSM and Awami Tehrik took out processions in Tharushah, Bhirya town and Moro in protest against the killing of Jamhori Watan Party chief Nawab Akbar Bugti.
In Moro, procession was taken out from the National Highway which marched on different roads.
The protesters burnt tyres and blocked the National Highway for one hour.
The protesters termed the killing of Nawab Bugti state terrorism.
HYDERABAD: A complete strike was observed in the main market of Qasimabad in protest against the killing of Nawab Akbar Bugti and his associates.
Activists of the Jeay Sindh Students Federation and Sindh National Party staged separate protest demonstrations outside the press club in protest against the killing.
In Tando Mohammad Khan, activists of the Sindh Taraqi Passand Party and PPP-SB staged protest demonstrations.
SUKKUR: A joint meeting of lawyers belonging to the Sindh High Court Bar Association and the District Bar Association was held here on Monday.
The meeting condemned the action of law-enforcement agencies in which Nawab Bugti and his associates were killed.
They said the action had weakened the country as people had lost their faith in the government.
The meeting demanded that bodies of the Baloch Shaheed should be handed over to their heirs for burial at their places of choice.
About 100 activists of the Jeay Sindh Mahaz took out a procession in Shikarpur.
They marched through the main roads and gathered at the Lakhidar chowk.
JSQM leader Qamar Mashwani led the protesters.
In Thull, a partial strike was observed.
Activists of the STTP, PPP, JWP and JSQM took out processions from the Baloch colony and Municipal office.
They shouted slogans against the government and marched on the main roads.
They gathered at the press club and observed a sit-in.
Ghafoor Buriro, Ameer Bux Soomro, Akbar Nandwani and Muneer Mughal led the protesters.
Leaders condemned the killing of Nawab Bugti and termed it an act of terrorism.
They said the Nawab was demanding just rights for the Baloch but the government instead of providing rights killed their leader.
They demanded that a case should be registered against the responsible.
THATTA: A complete strike was observed in Thatta and Makli as a sign of solidarity with the Baloch nationalists.
Activists of JSQM, Awami Tehrik, STP and PPP went to traders and small vendors and convinced them to shut down their business.
Shahi bazar, Fish market, Sonara bazar, all petrol pumps and small cabins remained closed in the twin towns.
Activists lit bonfire on the National Highway and converged at the press club.
Leaders condemned the killing of veteran leader Nawab Akbar Bugti and his comrades by the army.
BADIN: A complete strike was observed in Badin to condemn the killing of Nawab Akbar Bugti and to express solidarity with the Baloch people.
Shops, bazars and business centres remained closed.
The call for strike was given by the STP which was supported by other nationalist parties in the district.
Activists of the Awami Tehrik took out a procession in Shaheed Fazil Rahoo (Golarchi) in protest against the Kohlu incident.
