KARACHI, Aug 28: On the call of All-Pakistan Professors and Lecturers’ Association on Monday, more than 30,000 teachers of over 1,000 colleges in the country observed a protest day against the ban on teachers’ organisations in Sindh and manhandling and arrest of teachers during a peaceful rally in Karachi.
According to a SPLA press release, teachers all over the country wore black arm-bands and held protest gathering at various educational institutions. Teaching and non-teaching activities remained suspended in educational institutions on Monday.
Teachers demanded of the government for dismissal of TPO Tahir Naveed besides stern action against other police officials involved in manhandling of teachers. They also demanded to dismiss Sindh Education Minister Dr Hamida Khuhro and depute “any other education-friendly person” as the education minister.
Later, a meeting of All-Pakistan Professors and Lecturers Association was held with its Vice-President Prof Manzoor Hussain Chishty in the chair.
Prof Manzoor informed the meeting about the protest activities held in the provinces to express their solidarity with the teachers of Sindh. It was decided that a meeting of APPLA would be held on Sept 4 in Karachi to chalk out the future strategy that would be announced through a press conference on the same day.—PPI
