KARACHI: Babar accuses MMA of committing blasphemy

By Our Reporter

KARACHI, Aug 25: Stepping up pressure on the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal, the Muttaheda Qaumi Movement (MQM) on Friday declared it was invoking legal course by filing a petition against MMA legislators for allegedly indulging in acts of blasphemy, by tearing apart Women's Protect Bill (Hudood Ordinance amendment bill) inside the Parliament, containing religious text.

This was stated by MQM leaders at a news conference which they addressed at the Karachi Press Club. They included Federal Minister Babar Ghouri and State Minister for Religious Affairs, Amir Liaquat Hussain. They said the party has decided to adopt legal way by filing petitions in Supreme Court against the legislators of the religious alliance.

Babar Ghori alleged that the MMA leaders had desecrated Quran, Hadith, Sunnat and defamed Pakistan, and their act has angered the nation.

He asked the MMA leaders to seek apology from the Almighty Allah, people and Muslim Ummah instead of showing 'stubborn attitude'.

He alleged that these religious organizations were against creation of Pakistan. He said that the religious leaders' double standard had now been exposed.

He said that they (MMA) were friends of US when they were receiving dollars during Afghan Jihad. He claimed that the NWFP chief minister, Akram Durrani had gone to US to explain his position about Hisba Bill recently, which clearly showed they have rapport with America.

He said the bill was for protection of women and ending injustices against them and no one can speak against limits ordained by Allah. He suggested if the MMA have reservations against the bill, they should have submitted the same before the committee concerned instead of tearing apart the copy.

Amir Liaquat Hussain said ordinary people tear apart newspapers and magazines, containing religious text 'inadvertently' but the MMA lawmakers did this 'deliberately'.

Referring to MMA's contention of citing demolition of Masjid Zarar by the Holy Prophet, the religious minister opined that only the Holy Prophet could order demolition of a mosque.

He pointed out that the MQM had filed a reference against the MMA legislators and now they would approach the judiciary against them.

Babar Ghori said that the MMAs 'ideology' has nothing to do with Islam as in the past they have shown their resentment against the rule by a woman prime minister but now they have made an alliance with the woman (Benazir Bhutto).

Similarly, the religious parties had launched a movement against the PPP, but now they have sided with it, he added.

He claimed that no-confidence move had already been failed and now they (MMA) were busy in diverting public attention from their desecration act. He claimed that the MMA would boycott during voting on no-confidence motion as they lacked majority.
