KARACHI: Newly built parks sustain damage

KARACHI, Aug 24: Accumulation of rainwater at the Beach Park and Bagh Ibn-i-Qasim for eight days since Aug 17 has caused considerable damage to the swings, fountains and grass at the newly-developed recreational spots.

A visit to the parks revealed that there was no proper drainage system at the said parks, and owing to this, they remained flooded for many days.

Ironically, a storm water drain is located next to the parks and the seashore is also not far away from the parks, but the city government’s parks and horticulture department could not drain out the rainwater due to the absence of a proper slope down to the drains, a source in the city government pointed out.

“Millions of rupees have been spent on developing the two projects, but due to the absence of a proper drainage system, these facilities sustained damage,” the source said.

The substandard material used in the construction work is also to blame as this has left the two parks in a deplorable condition within a year, according to the source.

The parks had remained closed to public for last 10 days and could be reopened on Thursday after the stagnant water was drained out with the help of heavy machinery.
