Girls retain supremacy: BA, BSc exams

LAHORE, Aug 22: Keeping up their past academic performance, the girls have this year too outshone boys by clinching five out of top six positions in the Punjab University’s BA, BSc annual examinations for 2006.

The results declared by PU controller of examinations Prof Dr M. Taqi Zahid Butt at a prize-distribution ceremony at the university’s Faisal Auditorium on Tuesday showed that only one male candidate, who appeared privately, got the top position in the BA examination.

According to the notification, as many as 157,968 candidates appeared for the examination out of whom 52,811 were declared successful showing a pass percentage of 33.43. Some 65,604 candidates were regular and 92,364 private who appeared in full subjects.

In science group (BSc), Ayesha Zahid (Roll Number 30890) of the National Science College, Gujranwala, clinched the first position with 668 marks out of 800 marks. Sadia Saeed (70224) and Saleha Qayyum (69585) of the Government Queen Mary College, bagged second and third positions by obtaining 663 and 657 marks, respectively.

In the humanities group (BA), private candidate from Lahore district, Shahzadul Haq (95446) secured the first position with 680 marks. Saba Urooj (55044) of the Government College for Women, Jaranwala, stood second with 642 marks. While private candidate from Okara district, Mahwish Rashid bagged third position. She scored 633.

The preamble to the result notification says 135,051 candidates appeared for the BA examination out of whom 43,023 students were declared pass at a percentage of 31.86. In BSc examination, 20,769 candidates appeared out of whom 8,519 passed showing a percentage of 41.02.

Of the 43,023 candidates who were declared successful in BA examination, 9,186 have obtained first division, 31,998 second division and 1,839 candidates got third division. In BSc examination, out of the 8,519 successful candidates, 1,820 students bagged first division, 5,724 second and 975 third division.

Among the 2,148 candidates who sat for the additional subjects, Fazil, Wafaqul Madaris, nurses and English only, 1,269 candidates were declared successful — a pass percentage of 59.078.

The data about the regular college candidates shows that the pass percentage in BA is 46.93 and 49.70 in BSc. In BA, 36,488 regular candidates appeared and of them 17,123 passed the examination. In BSc, 10,749 regular candidates appeared out of whom 5,340 passed.
