Call to revise ordinance

Published August 23, 2006

ISLAMABAD, Aug 22: The Centre for Peace and Development Initiatives Pakistan has called for revising in the public interest the Freedom of Information Ordinance 2006 promulgated by the Sindh government.

In an official statement issued here on Tuesday, the centre observed that access to information was a fundamental human right, which was considered a touchstone of all other rights and freedoms.

It was, however, very unfortunate that the federal and provincial governments, despite their claims about transparency and accountability, continued to deny citizens their right to information. It was done in such a blatant manner that even the laws titled as freedom of information primarily sought to withhold information, instead of making it accessible to citizens, the statement added.
