KARACHI: Clogged gutters a nuisance

KARACHI, Aug 22: Gutters clogged by garbage are a nuisance in several city localities. Dr Khalid Shaikh, EDO Health, City District Government – Karachi, said it were mainly the clogged gutters that leave water standing for days and filthy water is witnessed gushing out incessantly.

“We are fumigating all these localities but are also conscious of the fact that these choked lines have to be cleared as stagnant water would continue to breed the vectors causing different diseases.

Maintaining that while the KWSB is engaged in addressing the situation, the CDGK’s health department, besides ensuring regular spray across the the city including major tertiary care hospitals as JPMC and Civil Hospital, has also established medical camps at most affected localities, including Bath Island.

There are doctors, paramedics and required medicines in adequate quantity, Dr Khalid Shaikh claimed.

Dr Seemien Jamali of JPMC said while no epidemic has been registered, people with malaria and gastro-enteritis are reaching JPMC in increasing numbers.

Doctors at Diarrhoeal Diseases Unit, Paediatric Department, CHK mentioned marked surge in the number of babies reporting with sever diarrhoea.—APP
