KARACHI, Aug 21: Pakistan No 1 Imran Shehzad struck a century break while defending champion Abu Saim and captain-designate for Doha Asian Games Naveen Perwani tasted shocking defeats on the opening day of 15th AKD Snooker Cup at Karachi Club on Monday.

Imran’s century break (102) came in the third frame in his 4-2 triumph against 13th ranked Mesam Zaidi, the scores being 108-21, 61-48, 107-1, 36-74, 53-62, 128-8.

Earlier, he missed another century break by just four points in the third frame on his way to register 4-0 win against Irfan Rasheed Khan. The scores were 70-52, 69-14, 96-36, 85-14.

Vishan Gir created quite a stir when he toppled title holder and seventh seed Abu Saim 4-0 in his group ‘B’ opener.

However, he could not maintain the pace and went down 1-4 to second seed Khurram Agha in the next.

Similarly, Mohammad Asif chalked up a 4-0 victory against fourth seed Naveen Perwani after going down 3-4 to Sohail Shehzad in fully stretched battle.

With 13 national titles under his belt, Mohammad Yousuf conjured up two wins in group ‘C’. First he handed a 4-1 defeat to Raees Khan and then whipped Saqib Butt 4-2.

He is slated to meet NWFP champion Rambel Gul in the last group match on Tuesday.

Rambel also notched up two wins when he overcame Saqib Butt 4-3 and Raees Khan 4-2.
