By Aftab Gilani

LAHORE, Aug 21: Running with magical strides, bay colt charismatic enthralled race-goers landing popular victory in a record breaking timing over 1100m during the day and night Lahore Summer meeting at the Racecourse on Sunday.

This colt from Tora Bora, Charismatic unveiled his charisma clocking one min 7 4/5 secs over 1100m defeating Ferrari by a neck with a strong finish. Both battled in the last 100m but Charismatic prevailed throughout by a neck's margin till finishing line.

He bettered the previous record timing of one minute 8 1/5 second set up by First Look on July 2 last. Ferrari, too improved the previous best timing though she finished second. This was the fifth race in racing order.

Earlier in the third race, three-year-old filly Simoom, completed a hat-trick of victories defeating Jewna by two lengths easily. The winner was available at four to one. Owned by Syed Parvaiz Hussain Shah the filly won running ahead of the field throughout the race distance.

An equally outstanding performance of the day came in the supporting and sixth race when the favourite colt, Mutajil outclassed his seven rivals by storming home to an easy win.

Running in the silks of Khawaj M. Arif, the winner beat Big Bird by six lengths.

In the same race the Lahore Race Club (LRC) stewards were not satisfied with the performance of Safe And Sound. They questioned his rider Shahid Mustafa. Not being satisfied they suspended him from riding for one month and also imposed a fine of rupees 10,000.

Jockey M. Hanif highlighted Sunday's races by piloting home three winners.

He began the evening ride with an easy win on Jago and followed it up with Simoom and Mutajil in the 3rd and 6th race, respectively. The riding boy Atif Javaid rode home two winners Sohna Billoo and Wendy Trace in the 2nd and 4th race.

Trainers, Sohail Aziz and Rashid Latif sent out two winners each. Sohail's winners were Jago and Simoom, in the opener and third race while Rashid Latif scored double through, Sohna Billoo and Wendy Trace, winners of the second and fourth race.

The favourite backers met with a grand success as six favourites won in a card of seven races.

The biggest disappointment for them came in the third race in which odds on favourite Philosopher pulled up lame and could hardly finish fourth. The filly Simoom upsetting the apple cart. Her connections watched her winning from the VIP gallery.

Meanwhile some riders , who had gone abroad in search of better prospects have returned home and a couple were seen at the races. Jockey M. Asif (II), who had gone to England and was performing the job of assistant trainer is also back home. He told Dawn that he was anxious to ride in Lahore to see what improvement he had made during his stay at Chester Racecourse over a year.

The Dawn correctly forecast six winners in the first six races of the card while the horse favoured for second position won the seventh race.
