ISLAMABAD, Aug 18: Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Mohammad Ali Durrani on Friday stressed the need for keeping the peace process between India and Pakistan on track and said it would remain on track as it was vital for the entire region and in the interest of both the countries.
Speaking at ‘meet the press’ programme arranged by the Rawalpindi-Islamabad Press Club, he said the present government has endeavoured to strengthen parliament, give complete independence to judiciary and the press.
He recalled that people who were now in the opposition and were raising a hue and cry over the Supreme Court judgement in PSM case had attacked it during their tenure.
He said the government would soon contact the opposition on the four-point reconciliation agenda he had recently announced.
He said that the no-trust move and the proposed opposition campaign would fail and it was in its (opposition’s) own interest to shun politics of agitation and join hands with the government to take the country forward on the path of democracy.
Earlier, talking to reporters at parliament cafeteria, he claimed the opposition’s attempts to mislead the people by misinterpreting the verdict on steel mills’ privatsation had failed.
He said that the people were politically aware and that they would once again demonstrate their rejection of politics of agitation and disruption when they go to poll next year.
“The people understand what the opposition is trying to do by wrongly twisting the judicial verdict,” he said, adding that during the debates in parliament, the government had exposed the opposition’s claims.
He said the Minister for Privatisation Zahid Hamid had participated in all parliamentary proceedings on steel mills case and exposed the unfounded allegations levelled by the opposition.
