Campbell retires

LONDON, Aug 18: Veteran British sprinter Darren Campbell announced on Friday he was calling time on his 15-year career, which climaxed with relay gold at the 2004 Athens Olympics.

The 32-year-old, part of the British team which claimed 4x100m relay gold at this month's European Championships, bowed out with victory in the 100 metres at the Celtic Cup in Grangemouth on Thursday.

“That was definitely my last race,” Campbell told UK Athletics.

“I decided to call it a day because I'm emotionally drained.

“I got a bit misty-eyed in the warm-up when I realised it was all going to come to a close.

“It's good to end your career with people who are just going out to do their best.”

Campbell courted controversy in Gothenburg last week when refusing to join in the traditional lap of honour after the relay victory, in protest at Dwain Chambers' inclusion in the team.—AFP
