KARACHI, Aug 18: The narrowing down of the 20ft wide Manghopir storm water drain to 8ft caused the inundation of Mianwali Colony, where around 5ft water accumulated during the heavy downpours on Thursday.
The town municipal administration of SITE blamed ill planning of the Orangi Pilot Project, in a press release issued here on Friday.
It said that Town Nazim Izharuddin accompanied by Naib Nazim Syed Badshah Zaman, TMO Imran Aslam and others, visited various areas of his town and took immediate steps for the relief of the rain-hit people of the low-lying areas.
Same position was in Old Golimar area, where rainwater entered the houses due to rise of water level in Lyari River. Hundreds of the residents of Old Golimar, Mianwali Colony and Haroonabad in SITE Town spent a sleepless night.
In Haroonabad, UC-3, due to encroachment over a drain, houses in the locality got submerged in 3ft-4ft water killing some buffaloes.
The town nazim also talked to City Nazim Syed Mustafa Kamal and asked him to provide more heavy machinery for draining out the rainwater.
He also called the officials concerned and staff from their houses to expedite the relief activities.
Gulshan Town: The sanitation staff cleared several inundated roads by Friday morning, while draining work at some places was still under way.
Town Nazim Mohammad Wasay Jalil inspected the work, a release said.
It said the sanitation staff cleared several affected roads including University Road, Sahba Akhtar Road, Abul Hassan Isfahani Road, Stadium Road, Sir Shah Suleman Road, Shabbir Ahmed Usmani Road and others.
According to the town nazim, two suction pumps at Civic Centre, one each at UK Apartments, UC-10, UC-12 and UC-7 has been provided.
He said some 50 sanitation workers drained out the accumulated rainwater with mops, wipers and other instruments, besides heavy draining machines had also been provided there.
The town nazim, while declaring emergency in his town, cancelled leaves of the staff concerned during rains. He also alerted all the civic departments and a special team, comprising of ten workers in each department formed to cope with any eventuality.
A special team of 50 sanitary workers of the Solid Waste Department had also been formed.

Saddar Town: The town nazim, Mohammed Dilawar, visited the rain affected areas of Hijrat Colony, City Railway Colony, Neelam Colony, Bath Island and other low lying areas on the night between Thursday and Friday and supervised the disposal of rainwater.
He directed the staff to work round-the-clock until all the accumulated water was drained out. The town's sanitary staff drained out water from various roads on Friday while staff of parks department removed fallen trees from Pakistan Chowk, M.A. Jinnah Road, Feroz Nana Road, Din Mohammed Wafai Road, Badshahi Road and Shahrah-i-Iran and cleared the roads for traffic.
An emergency cell is functioning round-the-clock at the town's central office and people can contact at telephone numbers 9211390 and 9211429 to lodge their complaints.—PPI/APP
