KARACHI, Aug 17: Leader of the Opposition in Sindh Assembly, Nisar Khuhro, on Thursday slammed the government for “preparing bogus voter's list, ban on teacher's unions, precarious law and order situation, apathy towards damages caused by the continuing monsoon rain and failure of the provincial government in protecting the rights of the province.”
Addressing a news conference in his assembly chamber, Mr Khuro said these issues would be taken up in the requisitioned session of the Sindh Assembly, beginning on Friday.
Mr Khuhro said that the opposition requisitioned the session to discuss these issues and to expose the failure of the Sindh government.
Other MPAs, Dr Sikandar Mahandro, Rafiq Engineer, Shama Mithani, Sharf-un-Nisa Leghari, Irfan Shah, Zahid Bhurgari and Rashid Rabbani Iqbal were also present on the occasion.
With regard to his allegations of bogus voters' list Mr Khuhro said that people were asked to come to sector and unit offices of the MQM if they work willing to enroll their names in the voter's list. He said election staff has virtually been made hostage and they were confined in the offices of the MQM.
He said despite complaints to the election commission no action was taken in this regard neither the provincial election commission sent any report to the chief election commissioner. He said provincial election commissioner also informed him that people of forms in Sindhi language were not available for Sindhi voter's while majority of rural areas people did not read the Urdu and English forms.
Leader of the opposition said that according to rules and procedures the assembly could not be prorogued without completing the items of the agenda of the requisitioned session. He said that the speaker has the power to convene and prorogue requisitioned session.
Mr Khuhro said that it was noted that the session, which was requisitioned, was convened on Friday and after an hour it was adjourned for Monday. He said in fact the government took advantage of this adjournment as Saturday and Sunday work counted as working days of the assembly proceedings. He said that the opposition also wanted to discuss the under hand deals in the name of privatisation of government organisations specially the Pakistan Steel.
He said the chief minister did not raise his voice for the rights of the province in the CCI meeting including the sale of prime land of Sindh and Karachi. He declared that the opposition would not accept the decisions of the CCI as its composition was not according to the constitution.
He said a conference of the opposition leaders of all the four provinces would be convened next month to discuss the CCI and its decisions and to draw the attention of the rulers that opposition should have been included in this constitutional body.
He said that the government even could not restore the rail link between railway Karachi and rest of the country and it was shameful that neither the railway was resign on this failure nor Gen Musharraf was dismiss him.
