DHAKA, Aug 17: Eleven members of an ultra-left group were killed in a fierce gunbattle with security forces in northern Bangladesh on Thursday.
The clash began when the radicals opened fire on soldiers who raided their hideouts in three villages in Pabna district.
The slain extremists were members of a Maoist group called Janajuddha, police said.
Police said it raided the faction’s hideouts after a tipoff that it was holding a secret meeting at a village. The radicals opened fire as soon as they saw the police.
