GUJRANWALA, Aug 16: The district police claimed on Wednesday to have seized 2,000 motorcycles which were used for doing a wheelie by miscreants on the Independence Day. DPO Muhammad Asif told journalists on Wednesday that in the wake of public complaints the police set up pickets throughout the district and seized the motorbikes without silencers.

Meanwhile, the National Highway and Motorway Police (Kharian to Lahore sector) in-charge SSP Osama Mumtaz Raja also directed the patrol officials to check motorcycles and rickshaw without silencers on the GT Road.

SUSPENDED: A police sub-inspector was suspended form service by regional police officer Malik Muhammad Iqbal here on Wednesday.Reports said SI Muhammad Nawaz of Malikwal was found guilty of defective investigation.

SHOT DEAD: A trader was shot dead by unidentified motorcyclists in Baghbanpura here on Wednesday.

Reports said Javed Younis, brother of former union council nazim Aziz Younis, was strolling outside his home when two motorcyclists opened fire on him killing him on the spot.

The motive behind the murder could not be ascertained. However, the Baghbanpur police instituted a murder case against unidentified assailants and are investigating.

HEPATITIS: A prisoner died of hepatitis here on Wednesday.

Reports said Pervaiz Masih of Mandi Bahauddin involved in a criminal case was arrested by the police and jailed. He had been suffering from hepatitis for the last few months.

The jail authorities handed over the body to the heirs after completing the legal formalities.

Meanwhile, gastroenteritis claimed yet another life in the DHQ hospital while more than 70 others were hospitalised in Gujranwala and Kamoki.

Muhammad Javed of Naushera Road was admitted to the DHQ hospital where he breathed his last.

WARRANTS: The Anti-Terrorism Court No 2 on Wednesday issued the death warrant of a convict Muhammad Ashraf involved in a murder case and directed the jail authorities to hang him on Aug 31.

According to the prosecution, convict killed his namesake Ashraf over an old enmity at Bhawani Das village in Alipur Chattha on Nov 24, 1993.
