LAHORE, Aug 15: Enjoying low placing in handicap, long shot filly Discovery captured the PTCL Jashn-i-Azadi Cup during the day and night Lahore Summer Meeting held in connection with the Independence Day celebrations at the Racecourse on Sunday.

This daughter of Cisco Wells beat fancied Tuman Khan by a length. Lucky Murad and Harry Can View completed the frame among seven starters.

The filly set a hot pace with Tuman Khan right behind her. It looked the colt had come closer for a neck-to-neck battle with Discovery but he lost hold of the bit and the game was over.

This was the feature and last race of the day.

As many as six cup races were held to highlight the celebrations of the auspicious occasion, three named Jashn-i-Azadi Cups, two Independence Day Cups and one August Cup, the month during which the independence day falls.

Three-year-old colt Byron won the Independence Day in a dramatic way. After being beaten to second position by Quince (Shahid Rehman up) the colt got benefit from an objection lodged reluctantly by Salah-ud-Din II, the rider of Sher-i-Punjab, placed third against the winner Quince for pressing near the one furlong post.

Salah-ud-Din II, did not lodge the objection. After the race, when the Lahore Race Club (LRC) stipendiary steward reported the matter to the LRC stewards, they called him, who told them he was pressed by Shahid Rehman. After watching the race video , they upheld the objection and disqualified Quince from the race.

The stewards also fined Quince's trainer Khurram Hussain rupees 10,000 for advising Salah-ud-Din II not to lodge objection. He did so when the matter was reported to stewards.

Jockey Shahid Rehman was both winner and loser on Sunday. He was loser for his own folly as he could have won the race had he kept his mount away from the horse in question.

Under the LRC rules of racing, he stands disqualified from riding for two weeks along with a fine of of rupees 5000.

Shahid was also deprived of the unique feat of a hat trick of cup victories when earlier he had piloted home a brace of winners in cup races through Noor and Nosha.

Jockey Salah-ud-Din II was the other jockey to win a double. He rode Golden Goal and Gold Krick in cup races.
