KARACHI: Nasreen for nazims’ close interaction with citizens

KARACHI, Aug 15: Naib Nazim Nasreen Jalil on Tuesday urged elected representatives to enhance interaction with people for timely redressal of all issues. While presiding over a training workshop for naib nazims held here under the auspices of de-centralization support programme, she asked district, town, union council nazims and other elected representatives to get full awareness of laws regarding their duties so that they along with concerned officials could discharge duties in a coordinated manner while serving the masses.

She termed it necessary for the elected representatives and concerned officials of the city government to be fully aware of laws of local government to create harmony and closer links with each other so that they could have full command on their job.

Nasreen Jalil vowed to continue holding of training workshops for elected representatives. She said that the decision-making process had been made more transparent after introduction of new local government system.

She said that the city and town nazims were discharging their duties properly and made all efforts to avoid any loss of life or property during rains. She said that complaint centres set up by the town administration played an effective role in this regard.

Lauding services of City Nazim Mustafa Kamal, she said that he inspected rehabilitation works across the city.

She said that Karachi lacked a comprehensive master plan, adding that there was need to set up rainwater nullahs along with all roads of the metropolis and encroachments be removed from existing nullahs.

“The city council would soon make a law under which no road could be constructed in Karachi in future without a provision of rainwater nullah,” she informed.

Addressing the inaugural session of the four-day workshop, Sindh Local Government Adviser Wasim Akhtar said that the provincial government was making all-out efforts to strengthen and improve the new local body system.

He observed that district and taluka/town naib nazims could serve people and society in a better way by attaining administrative expertise and experience. He said the training workshop was aimed at providing naib nazims with administrative and financial expertise so that they could have capabilities to make future planning and their effective implementation. The adviser said the provincial government had ensured that the technical and financial experts and high officials provided better information and suggestions on the problems faced by naib nazims.

He asked the district and taluka/town nazims to complete the training as they were bound to do so under the Sindh Local Government Ordinance-2001 and warned that disciplinary action would be taken otherwise against them under the law.

DSP Director Riaz Ahmed Memon highlighted aims and objectives of the workshop. —PPI
