KARACHI, Aug 15: Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad has stressed on unhindered work for completion of Lyari Expressway and to bring it in use for providing traffic facilities at the earliest.
Chairing a meeting at the Governor’s House on Tuesday, Ishratul Ibad directed the concerned authorities that there should be no disruption in the provision of right of way, availability of funds and resettlement of affected people.
Dr Ishratul Ibad issued directive to the city government for speeding up the process in providing the right of way. He directed that South Bound must be got evacuated by Sept 15 for construction of this expressway.
He was informed that 76 per cent of right of way had been made available so far while 90 per cent evacuation of South Bound had been completed.
It was stated that Lyari Expressway project would be completed at a cost of Rs7.84 billion within one year after complete right of way was made available.
The expressway from Sohrab Goth to Mauripur Bridge is 16.5km-long which will have six-metre-wide service road. The expressway will have inter-changes at four points while there will be toll plazas at four places besides having eight overpasses, three other bridges and 24 pedestrian underpasses.
The meeting was informed that 60 per cent physical progress on the project, which was started on May 11, 2002, had been achieved.
Lyari Expressway Resettlement Project Director Shafiqur Rehman Paracha briefed the governor about progress of work and said that despite heavy rains, the problems which used to be faced in the wake of rains did not occur in Lyari River and as a result of this project, the city and people remained safe from flood dangers.
Shafiqur Rehman Paracha said that 21,659 out of 24,800 families in the project had been shifted.The meeting was told that graves coming in the way of project were being shifted to newly developed graveyard near the Super Highway. The graveyard has been well planned along with provision of water, electricity and sanitation facilities.
The meeting was attended by Sindh Local Government Adviser Waseem Akhtar, Finance Adviser M.A. Jalil, Nazim Mustafa Kamal, Principal Secretary Mohammed Saleem Khan, Additional Chief Secretary Development Ghulam Sarwar Khehro, ACS Local Government Mirza Karim Baig, and other officials.
APWA: Sindh Governor Ishratul Ibad has said that the government is making practical efforts for women representation in every field and women empowerment to make them useful segment of the society.
He was talking to a delegation of APWA, led by its President Laila Haroon Sarfraz, which called on him at Governor’s House on Tuesday.
The governor observed that the number of female students in educational institutions was significant and they often achieve top positions in the exams, however, their role was invisible in professional life. He said that the government was taking steps to bridge this gap.
Dr Ibad said the outcome of the steps taken with the introduction of local government system was now being seen in elected Houses and other fields.
He welcomed the APWA’s programmes in the fields of health, education and social welfare and assured them of their full cooperation.—APP
