‘NAB paid Rs1.9m to 13 prosecutors’

ISLAMABAD, Aug 9: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) paid Rs1.9 million to 13 prosecutors/advocates hired during the year 2005-06, Federal Minister for Parliamentary Affairs and Minister in charge of the Prime Minister Secretariat Dr Sher Afgan told the National Assembly here on Wednedsay.

Replying to a question raised by MNA Zulfiqar Ali Gondal, Dr Afgan said that NAB had hired five advocates of Supreme Court namely Mohammad Ibrahim Satti, Ahmed Raza Qasuri, Mohammad Bilal, Mohammad Jaffar Hashmi and Chaudhry Naseer Ahmed, who charged Rs475,000, Rs50,000, Rs25,000, Rs60,000 and Rs75,000 respectively.

The NAB has paid Rs212,500 to Mr Satti, followed by Rs12,500 to Mr Qasoori, Rs25,000 to Mr Bilal, Rs32,000 to Mr Hashmi and Rs25,000 to Mr Ahmed, he added. The NAB hired Asad Manzoor Butt, who charged Rs27,500, which NAB had paid to him, he added.

The NAB haired seven BA LLBs Abdul Basir Qureshi, Waqar Hassan Mir, Haroon Rasheed Cheema, Mian Nusratullah, S M Nazim, Khawaja Ejaz Feroz and Saira Aslam, who charged Rs285,000, Rs3,25000, Rs200,000, Rs12,500, Rs55,000, Rs75,000 and Rs55,000 respectively, which NAB had paid to them.

Replying to another question raised by MNA Yasmeen Rehman, the minister said that Dr Ishrat Hussain had been appointed as Chairman National Commission on Government Reforms with the status of federal minister.

He has been drawing a salary of Rs160,000 per month, house rent of Rs70,000 per month, utilities, one 1600 cc chauffeur- driven car with 340 litter petrol per month and T.A.D.A. on official tour (domestic/abroad) as admissible to federal minister, be said.

The commission has been set up in keeping with the ongoing process of reforms, to review the size and structure of government, the processes and procedures in use and the government rules and regulations.

Replying to yet another question raised by MNA Rubina Saadat Qaimkhani, the minister said three 2005 model Toyota Corolla vehicles of 1300 cc had been purchased during the financial year 2005-06 for the Prime Minister Secretariat and these were in the use of media advisor to PM, advisor to PM on energy and chairman ERRA from October 1, 2005 to May 2, 2006, chairman National Commission for Government Reforms from May 3, 2006 to July 12, 2006 and protocol duty from July 7 to till.

The total cost of expenditure incurred on the vehicles on repair and petrol was Rs136,153 and 246,037 respectively during 2004-06.

Mr Niazi said nine vehicles - two Toyota Land Cruiser Turbo 4164 cc Model 2004, a Toyota Lexus 4293cc model 2004, a Toyota Corolla 1600cc model 2004, a Toyota Corolla 1300cc model 2004, a Toyota Hiace 2446 cc model 2004, a Suzuki Van 800 cc model 2004 and Hino Bus HP-210 model 2004 had been purchased for escort duty, military secretary to PM, director security, general duty and staff duty, respectively during 2004-05.

The total cost of expenditure incurred on the vehicles’ repair and petrol is Rs171,014 and Rs1,641,650.40 during 2004-06.

Replying to yet another question raised by MNA Inayat Begum, Interior Aftab Ahmed Khan Sherpao said that a campaign for recovery of illegal weapons was started from 2001 and so far over 0.4 million weapons and over 2.5 million rounds/ammunition had been recovered and this campaign was still continuing.

Replying to a question raised by MNA Dr Farida Ahmed, the minister said a total number of 104,436 chickens had been culled in Islamabad due to bird flu during the year of 2005-06.
