KARACHI: Opportunities for training of youths discussed
KARACHI, Aug 9: Sindh Labour, Transport and Industries Minister Adil Siddiqui has directed the manpower and training director to provide more opportunities to youths for acquiring technical, vocational and apprenticeship training in the province.
He issued these directives while presiding over a meeting to review performance of the directorate of manpower and training here on Wednesday.
In the meeting, the minister was briefed that the employment exchanges had registered 43,060 persons for employment, of which 39,828 were male, 3,204 female and 28 were ex-servicemen. He was told that 10,163 jobs were also provided to 9,828 males, 320 female and 115 ex-servicemen, while 10,178 vacancies were notified by public and private sectors throughout the province.
In 17 employment exchanges working in the province, 1,617 employers utilised services and 1,912 essential personnel including fresh graduate doctors and engineers were registered.
The minister asked the M&T director for more coverage and compulsory notification of vacancies and effective implementation of the Essential Personnel Ordinance of 1948 and Disable Personnel Ordinance of 1980.
The meeting decided that the employment exchanges in Sindh should be given a specific task to serve unemployed youth, ensuring the private and public sector employers notify vacancies to employment exchange.
The free services for registration and placement should be extended to all unemployed youths of the province for that purpose employment exchange be equipped and inter-netted.
Talking about the role of vocational guidance officers, the meeting was told that director manpower and training had provided guidance to 13,421 students of 151 schools. The minister directed for coverage and effective counselling to students throughout the province.
While briefing the minister on skill development, the role of 34 training centres was highlighted. The manpower and training director informed him that 4,835 people in 30 vocational and technical trades were under training in the province. Besides, 115 establishments were imparting training to 3,056 educated youths under apprenticeship training ordinance of 1962.
Adil Siddiqui appreciated the work done on 52nd round of annual establishment enquiry, 46th round of survey of professional technical and vocational training institutes and desired publication of the reports and its dissemination to all relevant employers, agencies, offices, universities and other research-oriented organisations.
On development activities, the minister was informed that prime minister’s skills development programme in tune of Rs1924 million was approved by the PDWP under which 60,000 more skilled workers in 30 vocational and technical traders would be trained and the stipend of Rs500 would be paid to each trainee per month.
The minister discussed annual development programme. The meeting was informed that Rs50 million had been made available for 10 schemes under the annual development programme. Two new schemes in the Northern Bypass Karachi and seven youth vocational centres in Sindh had also been approved.
Adil Siddiqui termed the progress satisfactory and directed for accelerating the pace of progress. The meeting was told that construction work on federal funded schemes, under the prime minister’s directives for establishment of vocational training centres in Kashmore would be initiated next month.
He also lauded coal-mine related trades and desired its immediate implementation before coal mine activities started in Thar. He said the coal-mine employees should be trained before the training activities started and the manpower was required there.—PPI
