KARACHI: JPMC told to set up medical board for injured UTP
KARACHI, Aug 9: The Sindh High Court on Wednesday directed the director of Jinnah Post-graduate Medical Center to convene a medical board for examining an injured under-trial prisoner.
SHC's division bench, comprising Sarmad Jalal Osmany and Justice Ali Sain Dino Metlo, was hearing a petition filed by Ms Jamila who stated that her son Wazir Ahmed had been languishing in jail without any medical treatment for one year.
Wazir was arrested by the police in injured condition after a shootout in Baldia in Jan 2005.
The petitioner expressed fears about the life of her son who was paralyzed after the bullet injury.
She said that the condition of her son had been deteriorating due to lack of medical treatment, insisting that doctors did not take out bullets from his body. The UTP was produced on a wheelchair as matter was taken up before the court.
In compliance of the court orders, medical superintendent of Civil Hospital submitted his report after examining the UTP. He said no foreign object was found in UTP’s body and he did not need surgical intervention.
The statement by the MS was disputed by the petitioner who said her son had received three bullets. She requested that her son be sent to the JPMC for treatment. AAG Sarwar Khan did not oppose the request.
The court directed jail authorities to produce the UTP on Aug 11 before JPMC director who shall convene a medical board and submit a report on Aug 15.
The court also directed that if JPMC director feels necessary, the UTP be admitted.—PPI
