Steps taken to face flood emergency

Dawn Report

HYDERABAD, Aug 8: With a ‘high flood’ to reach Sindh in a few days, irrigation authorities have identified several vulnerable points along Indus embankments. Two points — Akil and Abad Mungli — in Larkana district have been declared vulnerable.

Rocks and stones are being used to strengthen embankments and to stop erosion. People living by the river are expressing the fear that a rise in water level could effect Paroo Bhutto, Agani, Mitho Chandio, Shaikh-Taggar, Moor Chandio, Aqil and other villages which are close to the Aqil-Agani loop bund. Fishermen living in boats have moved their floating homes to the right bank.

The Sindh irrigation department released 2,000 cusecs water of the Manchhar Lake into the Indus River as a safety measure.

A team of army officials visited the Manchhar Lake embankment to ensure that it remains safe when the flood surge from the north hits the area. Officials said that more water would be released from the lake after the river level rise.

Meanwhile, Jamshoro DCO Dr Khawar Jamil said he had found a ‘very weak’ point along the Indus embankment between Manjhand and Sann.

In a letter to the irrigation secretary he said that an apron should be built on an emergency basis at the point.
