KOHAT, Aug 5: The nazim of union council Surgul, Mohammed Gulzar was remanded in custody for a day after the district and sessions judge ordered registration of a kidnapping case against him on Saturday.

According to details, Rafaqat Rashid, a student of Kohat University of Science and Technology, went missing on June 7 only to return home after 22 days.

On the next day of his disappearance, Rafaqat’s father Inspector Rashid Gul registered a case of kidnapping against Razim Khan, Manja Gul and Liaquat Ali. However, when the case came up for hearing, Rafaqat revealed that he had been abducted by Union Council Nazim Mohammed Gulzar, along with the other three accused.

The judge directed the police to register a proper case against the nazim and arrest him immediately.

After arresting the nazim under section 365 PPC, the Saddar police handed him over to the Kohat Bureau of Investigation (KBI) which obtained a day’s custody from a court.

A KBI official told Dawn that on the expiry of his remand period on Sunday, Gulzar would be presented before the duty magistrate who would decide whether to extend the custody of the accused or send him to prison.

Earlier on January 25, the said nazim had been arrested for damaging a school building while leading a protest procession on Bannu road. The nazim had to spend a week in jail, along with his 13 accomplices, before being bailed out. That case too is under trial.
