KARACHI, Aug 1: Life in the city remained paralysed the third day on Tuesday as the civic agencies failed to restore power, telecommunication, water and sanitation services. Traffic jams were common sights as many streets and thoroughfares remained submerged by rainwater and overflowing sewage.
Following prolonged power breakdowns, enraged consumers took to the streets in various localities and blocked traffic on roads. The power utility failed to restore electric supply to some areas even after 96 hours. A KESC spokesman admitted that 10-15 per cent area of the city was still without electricity.
People in various areas, most of them from posh localities of Defence and Clifton, complained of overflow of sewerage lines. Sewage mixed with rainwater entered their houses and seeped into underground water tanks.
A number of telephone lines ceased to work due to cable faults, but the department could not carry out repair work due to stagnant rainwater.
