By Our Staff Reporter

LAHORE, Aug 1: An accountability court on Tuesday summoned former Rawalpindi corps commander and ex-chairman of Wapda Gen (retd) Zahid Ali Akbar on Aug 5 in a reference filed by the National Accountability Bureau against him.

NAB had filed the reference against Gen Akbar on Monday on charges of corruption and maintaining a standard of living beyond his known sources of income.

An accountability court official said the general, who was also a former chief of Pakistan Cricket Board, had been summoned on Aug 5 for proceedings in the case.

Gen Akbar is said to be the first former corps commander against whom a corruption case has been filed by NAB. NAB claimed the accused during his tenure as Wapda and cricket board head from 1987 to 1992 had committed corruption.

According to NAB, the accused owned assets worth Rs176 million in his name and in the names of his dependents. These assets include 77 bank accounts in rupees and dollars in his name and in the names of his relatives and business concerns.

Gen Akbar is said to have settled abroad and has also been accused of sending abroad $706,200 from 1993 to 1998.
