COLOMBO, Aug 1: Israeli-made Kfir jets flew over LTTE held regions in eastern Trincomalee as the Air Force intensified its pounding of strategic Tiger guerilla targets on Tuesday, the sixth day of a military operation launched by the government to free a water blockade imposed by the rebels on government held territory in Trincomalee.
Tiger rebels unleashed heavy retaliation and began shelling the Naval base in eastern Trincomalee on Tuesday noon killing at least seven Navy personnel as a ship transporting more than 800 Army personnel narrowly escaped LTTE attacks. The ship was steered to international waters before it came under fire, Naval sources said.
