Soccer: Brazil to try out new faces against Norway

RIO DE JANEIRO, Aug 1: Brazil's new coach Dunga named an experimental squad for his first match on Tuesday with no place for Ronaldinho, Adriano, Kaka or Ronaldo. The squad for the friendly away to Norway on August 16 included eight survivors from Brazil's World Cup squad and eight uncapped players. Brazil lost in the quarter-finals to France.

“I'm only going to talk about the players who are here,” the 42-year-old Dunga told reporters.

“There are logistical problems, some players won't have been training for long enough and we have organised ourselves around these problems,” he said.

Dunga added: “Everyone will have a chance, the door isn't closed to anyone. It depends on them and on their performances, we want them to return to the Brazilian team in excellent form, determined and motivated.”

World Cup captain Cafu and midfielder Emerson were also missing.

Dunga's squad included a mixture of the less experienced members of Brazil's World Cup squad combined with several untried players who have been performing well at home.

He also included three players based in Russia – Daniel Carvalho, Duda Cearense and Vagner Love – plus midfielder Elano, who is based in Ukraine.

This marked a change in direction from predecessor Carlos Alberto Parriera, who only looked towards the mainstream European leagues.

“These players have done well at lower age levels and everyone will have equal chances based on merit,” said Dunga.

The new Brazilian coach said he had resisted the temptation to make a clean sweep and pick only home-based players.

“We can't start from zero,” he said. “It's been proved that radical change doesn't work – not just in football but in any walk of life.”

“Brazil have lots of quality players who deserve a chance,” he added.

The World Cup survivors were Cicinho, Fred, Gilberto, Gilberto Silva, Juan, Lucio, Luisao and Robinho.

The uncapped players were goalkeepers Fabio and Gomes, defenders Alex and Marcelo and midfielders Daniel Carvalho, Jonatas and Morais and forward Wagner.

Goalkeepers – Gomes (PSV Eindhoven, Netherlands), Fabio (Cruzeiro)

Defenders – Cicinho (Real Madrid, Spain), Maicon (Inter Milan, Italy), Gilberto (Hertha Berlin, Germany), Marcelo (Fluminense), Lucio (Bayern Munich, Germany), Juan (Bayer Leverkusen, Germany), Alex (PSV Eindhoven, Netherlands), Edmilson (Barcelona, Spain), Luisao (Benfica, Portugal)

Midfielders – Gilberto Silva (Arsenal, England), Elano (Shakhtar Donetsk, Ukraine), Daniel Carvalho (CSKA Moscow, Russia), Morais (Vasco da Gama), Jonatas (Flamengo)

Forwards – Duda Cearense (CSKA Moscow, Russia), Fred (Olympique Lyon, France), Robinho (Real Madrid, Spain), Vagner Love (CSKA Moscow, Russia), Julio Baptista (Real Madrid, Spain), Wagner (Cruzeiro).—Reuters
