Provinces to get more autonomy, says minister

PESHAWAR, Aug 1: Federal Minister for Inter-Provincial Coordination Salim Saifullah has said that every decision on issues related to provincial rights will be taken judiciously and the federating units will be given further autonomy.

He was speaking as chief guest at a seminar held here on Tuesday.

The seminar, presided over by Leader of the Opposition in the NWFP Assembly Shezada Gastasap, was arranged by Parliamentary Commission on Human Rights coordinator MPA Arshad.

MNAs and MPAs from the NWFP apprised the federal minister of the problems being faced by the province.

Mr Khan said that the federal government believed in provincial autonomy and the provinces would be given further autonomy with the passage of time.

He said that the Council of Common Interest (CII) would hold its meeting soon and every decision on issues, including distribution of resources from the federal divisible pool, net hydel profit and share in the employment opportunities, would be taken very judiciously.

He asked the provincial government to forward their problems properly to the federal government.

He highlighted the importance of inter-provincial coordination ministry and the Council of Common Interest.

He said the provincial government should ensure proper distribution of resources among district governments, because 80 per cent problems of the people could be resolved at local level.

The district governments, he said, should be authorized to solve their problems at the grass-roots level.

He urged the provincial government to take interest in mega projects being launched by the federal government in the NWFP.—APP
