KARACHI, Aug 1: City Nazim Syed Mustafa Kamal on Tuesday paid a visit to the rain-affected areas of Saddar Town and reviewed the rainwater disposal work. During the visit he was accompanied by Town Nazim Mohammed Dilawar, KWSB MD Iftekhar Haider and some town officers.

The Saddar nazim told Syed Mustafa Kamal about the problem faced in draining out rainwater because of the closure of the culvert leading to Nahr-i-Khayyam in Clifton and as a result of which water had accumulated on roads and streets in the entire area.

He said the culvert was opened with the help of an excavator and there would be a significant improvement in the next few hours.

Meanwhile the dewatering work was going on in the low-lying areas of the town with the help of pumps while trenches appearing on the roads were being filled.

The parks department had completed the removal of trees which had fallen during the rain.

The City Nazim expressed satisfaction over the steps taken in the aftermath of Sunday and Monday rainfall and said that his government was working under a coordinated planning.

He said all impediments in the way of draining out the rainwater would be removed for which the city government would extend all assistance and provide additional machinery to the town administration.

He asked the KWBS MD to expedite the cleaning of sewerage lines with the help of suction pumps.

I.I. CHUNDRIGAR ROAD: The city nazim on Monday night inspected the portion of I.I. Chundrigar Road where city government teams were busy in draining out accumulated water.

Accompanied by DCO Fazlur Rehman, the nazim went round various city areas from 2am to 6am from where complaints had been received about water accumulation and where city government's emergency squads had started a dewatering operation.

He met the staff engaged in relief work and appreciated their spirit.

EMERGENCY CENTRES: The city government has set up three emergency centres to speed up the relief activities during monsoon rains.

The relief centres have been set up at Central Fire Brigade Station, Civic Centre and Gulistan-i-Mustafa Fire Station at Sohrab Goth. These centres will work under the supervision of Chief Fire Officer.

The city government has expedited the relief works and draining out the rainwater accumulated on roads and streets in the city.

The officials of KWSB, works and services department and town administrations will be present at these centres round-the-clock. They will be responsible for draining out rainwater and clearing the choked sewerage lines.

The city government has hired 20 excavators, 20 dumpers, 20 loaders and pumping machines to carry out the relief and rescue work.

Control room: A control room has been established at the Central Police Office to cope with any emergency during the ongoing monsoon rains in the city.

According to a handout issued on Tuesday, the control room will function round-the-clock, monitor the situation and submit report of every hour to the Sindh AIGP and Karachi CCPO. —Agencies
