Pavin moves four clear in record-tying fashion

MILWAUKEE (Wisconsin), July 30: Corey Pavin stayed on track for his first PGA Tour title in a decade with a record-equalling performance at the weather-hit Milwaukee Open on Saturday.

One stroke clear with seven holes to play when the second round was suspended in fading light on Friday, the American stretched his lead to four by completing a flawless six-under-par 64.

The 46-year-old Pavin, whose last tour victory came at the 1996 Colonial tournament, picked up three more shots on the Brown Deer Park Golf Course to finish at 15-under 125.

That earned him a share of the PGA Tour scoring record for the first 36 holes with compatriots Tiger Woods, Mark Calcavecchia and Tom Lehman.

Pavin paved the way for his scoring spree with an opening 61 that included a Tour record front nine of 26.

Fellow American Jason Bohn fired a 64 to secure second place with compatriots Jeff Sluman (65), D.J. Trahan (65) and Jerry Kelly (67), Australia's Nathan Green (64) and South African David Frost (66) tied for third at nine under.

Seventy-eight players had to complete the second round on Saturday before the halfway cut fell at two-under 138.

Among those missing out were twice champion Carlos Franco of Paraguay, Australian Craig Parry and American Mark Brooks, winner of the 1996 PGA Championship.

Title holder Ben Crane was disqualified on Friday for signing an incorrect scorecard.

American Crane, who opened with a 67, marked down a three at the par-five sixth hole instead of a regulation five, earning himself a premature exit from the tournament.

He carded a 72 in the second round to finish at one under, one short of the cut line.
