GUJRANWALA, July 30: Over 500 telephone numbers in a dozen villages of Wazirabad tehsil have been lying dead for the last some days as thieves took away cable and other equipment from Jandiala Dhabwala exchange.

Reports said unidentified outlaws had been targeting Jandiala Dhabwala exchange for some time and it was the fourth incident of cable theft.

Subscribers of Lungialwali, Mahi Chak, Darbar Pir Shah, Chak Sanat, Aroop Chak, Lungialwali Morr and Aroopgarh said their telephones had gone `dead’ for the last several days while the PTCL senior officers assured them that their numbers would be restored shortly.

Reports said that SP Dr Shehzad Aslam Siddiqi of vigilance cell paid a surprise visit to the police station. During checking, he recovered a bottle of liquor from the kit box of SI Zulfikar Ahmad and an illicit pistol from constable Amjad Pervaiz.

While SI Shaukat Ali, who was transferred, did not hand over court cases to the muharrar to gain monetary benefits.

The SP also found that ASI Liaquat Ali had registered a false theft case against two brothers — Adnan and Wasim — and took a heavy bribe from them for the discharge of their case.

DPO Mian Muhammad Asif got registered a case against the ASI after serving on him a show-cause notice.
