KARACHI: Khuhro slams govt, MQM

Published July 31, 2006

KARACHI, July 30: Leader of the opposition in Sindh Assembly, Nisar Khuhro on Sunday claimed that the Muttahida Qaumi Movement’s stand off with the government that resulted in its ministers and advisors resignations was at the behest of rulers so that ground could be prepared to accept its demands.

Commenting on the so-called amicable resolution of the issue of resignation, Mr Khuhro said the General was in the town and if the MQM had serious problem, it would not have hesitated to raise the issue with him. But it was done at the fag end of his visit. Mr Khuhro was of the view that it would be naïve to believe that the general was so ill-informed of the developments.

Leader of the opposition claimed that it was done with a plan to justify the acceptance of MQM demands. He claimed that the MQM was demanding quota for the party in the provincial jobs.

Mr Khuhro said it was against the urban-rural quota system which not earmarked for the parties. This demand, he said, was dangerous and was aimed at foisting dictatorship of the MQM on the people Sindh.

He also expressed concern over reports that MQM was allegedly demanding 70 per cent quota in police and alleged that it was being done to give legal cover to its own militia.

Mr Khuhro also claimed that the MQM was now demanding city government for Hyderabad after getting it fragmented to reap the electoral advantage.
