KARACHI, July 29: As many as 70 people were deprived of their cars, motorcycles, or cellphones in various localities here on Saturday.

Police sources said 18 vehicles – 10 cars and eight motorbikes – were either hijacked or stolen. Four cars were snatched at gunpoint and six others stolen. Three motorbikes were taken away at gunpoint and five others stolen.

They said that 25 people reported that they were held at gunpoint by unidentified bandits, who snatched their cellphones, cash and valuables. Twenty-seven other people reported that their cellphones were stolen.

SUICIDE: A teenager hanged himself in his home in Ibrahim Hyderi after being admonished by his mother on Saturday.

Police said the boy, identified as Fayyaz Ali, 18, was admonished by his mother on some petty issue. In a fit of depression, he locked himself in a room and hanged himself from a ceiling fan. Police shifted the body to hospital for autopsy. The body was later handed over to the deceased’s family.

ACCIDENT: A youth died and a friend of his suffered injuries when their motorbike was hit by an unknown vehicle in Orangi Town on Saturday.

Police said that Samlan and Junaid were on their motorbike when an unknown vehicle hit them and sped away in Sector 7, Orangi Town. Both riders fell to the ground and received injuries. They were taken to a hospital, where Salman was pronounced dead on arrival.

ARRESTED: Pakistan Customs Drug Enforcement Cell arrested a Pakistani passenger at the airport for trying to smuggle out 4.5 kilograms of heroin.

A press release issued here on Saturday said that Said Zaman, leaving for Colombo by Sri Lankan Airlines flight UL-144, was intercepted at the Jinnah Terminal and during the search 4.5 kilograms heroin was found concealed inside the cavities of a VCD, a fluorescent lantern, a telephone apparatus, a cassette recorder, and a wall clock carried by him. The value of the heroin, if sold in the international market, would have been Rs45 million.

The passenger was arrested and a case under the Control of Narcotics Substances Act 1997 was registered.
