High-level contacts may ease situation

By Our Reporter

KARACHI, July 28: Convener of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement, Dr Imran Farooq on Friday confirmed a telephonic contact between Gen Pervez Musharraf and the MQM chief Altaf Hussain, following the resignations tendered by its ministers and advisers from the central and Sindh government.

This was confirmed by Mr Salahuddin Haider, former adviser on information to the Sindh Chief Minister here late Friday night.

Dr Imran Farooq said that his party did not want to create problems for the president and believed that apparently Gen Musharraf was not kept informed about the situation.

Dr Imran, who sounded conciliatory towards the president, however made it clear that his party’s ministers were not attending the office because they have resigned. .

Dr Imran Farooq’s conciliatory tone was similar to that of prime minister Shaukat Aziz and gave the indication that on both sides there was a desire for mutual accommodation.

Sources said that the situation was expected to further ease on Saturday when the MQM leadership would take stock f the situation in the light of the high-level contacts from Islamabad.

But sources in the ruling coalition were of the view that such situation in the future must not arise and the partners must decide the rules of the game once for all and must decide about the dos and the don’ts. They believe that such developments would be a problem for the ruling party in the coming elections.

Meanwhile, according to MQM sources, Mr Altaf Hussain has expressed his displeasure with Aamir Liaquat Hussain and Shmaim Akhtar, MNAs and had even called for unseating them in a recent party meeting.
