KARACHI, July 28: United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Resident Representative for Pakistan Haoliang Xu has said that the UN team in the country seeks to engage meaningfully with its partners in the civil society and in the private sector to promote better corporate governance and social responsibility.

Speaking at the launch ceremony of Engro Chemical Pakistan Limited’s “Sustainability Report” here on Friday, he said that the UNDP believed the business sector had much to contribute to development challenges and progress of the country.

He said that the private sector was already meeting the needs of the poor where the government did not reach and added that large corporations such as Engro were leading private eco-systems that develop and strengthen the knowledge and capabilities of local and small medium enterprises and micro enterprises.

The Engro report was based on the global reporting initiatives (GRI) guidelines making it comparable with international reporting standards, says a press release.
