Speakers call for revival of Pakistan-India peace process
ISLAMABAD, July 27: Speakers at a seminar urged Pakistan and India to revive peace process and defeat the designs of extremists who want to disrupt it.
Speaking at a seminar on “Terrorism and peace process” arranged by the South Asia Free Media Association (Safma), they said anarchy suited some elements who wanted to bring India and Pakistan at the brink of a war and hoped that the two South Asian states would not let these elements succeed and continue their march towards peace.
Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Maulana Fazlur Rehman said India and Pakistan should resolve their bilateral disputes through peaceful means as wars could not resolve conflicts.
He said India should realise that while there were certain lobbies which wanted to see peace in South Asia, there were some conspiring to sabotage the peace process.
“India must not overlook the lobbies which want to worsen the situation”, he remarked.
He observed that stalling of peace process by Pakistan and India would be tantamount to playing in the hands of the elements which were interested in seeing the process being reversed.
Condemning the Israeli aggression against Lebanon, he lamented that the United States used veto power to defeat the otherwise unanimous UN resolution against the attack on sovereignty of Lebanon.
He said it was a matter of concern that the Muslim world was not raising a forceful voice against the Israeli aggression. He observed that all efforts should be made to find out a peaceful solution to the crisis, but the Islamic world should brace up to fight the Israeli aggression against Lebanon under a single command, if these efforts fail as a result of stubborn attitude of the aggressor.
“Otherwise the rulers of the Islamic countries should allow mujahideen to go to the brotherly country and wage a jihad against the aggressor,” he demanded.
Maulana Fazlur Rahman said the situation was different from the time when Israel attacked several countries of Middle East four decades ago and made them helpless in hours. He said now Israeli forces were facing strong resistance in Lebanon.
He said Hamas had been voted to power in Palestine through ballot and regretted that statements were made that the Hamas and its government would not be recognised.
