KARACHI: Boat accident survivors

KARACHI, July 27: All 10 fishermen, rescued by the Maritime Security Agency personnel and Edhi volunteers after a boat mishap on Tuesday, are under treatment at a hospital in Buleji Village whereas the bodies of seven fishermen have been handed over to their relatives.

This was stated by Adviser to the Chief Minister on Fisheries and Livestock Fakir Jadam Mangrio here on Thursday.

The deceased have been identified as Shafi Baloch, Ashraf Ali, Mohammad Atiq, Noorul Haq, Azizul Haq, Rashid and Shafi Mohammad. The survivors are Mohammad Feroz, Abdul Khalique, Shaukat Ali, Noor Shafiq, Abul Kalam, Noor Alam, Mohammad Mujib, Roshan Ali, Ghiasuddin and Shahjehan.

Their fishing boat Al-Tahir overturned on Tuesday morning near Cape Montz after its engine seized. After receiving information, the Maritime Security Agency personnel and Edhi volunteers rushed to the scene and rescued 10 of the 17 crew members. A hectic search operation was conducted to fish out the bodies.

Mr Mangrio, who is also Chairman of Fishermen Cooperative Society, termed the incident ‘shocking’ and said that the FCS would provide financial assistance to the affected families and bear the expenses of burial of the deceased fishermen. He said that each of the affected families would be paid Rs5,000.

Mr Mangrio said he would also discuss the issue of financial assistance with the chief minister whereas the officials concerned had been directed to ensure proper treatment of the survivors.

He said he had also issued directives for an early payment of life insurance amount to the bereaved families.
