KARACHI, July 27: Demanding an immediate halt to Israeli onslaught against Lebanese and Palestinian people, Naib Amir of Jamaat-i-Islami Prof Ghafoor Ahmed has said that the US and Israel were destroying peace.

Addressing a press conference at the Idara Noor-i-Haq here on Thursday, he pointed out that the US and Israel had rejected the repeated appeal by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan for a ceasefire. If the UN body was not able not establish peace, it should better be dissolved, he added.

Regretting the discreet silence adopted by the Arab League and Organisation of Islamic Countries on the issue under US pressure, he said the entire civilised world wanted an immediate ceasefire. He also referred to the demands coming from various international circles that weapons of mass destruction be taken back from Israel.Prof Ghafoor said that Israeli jets were targeting residential areas and more than 500 people had already been killed in the ongoing operation but instead of stopping the aggression, the US came out with support and assistance to the aggressor by providing it with more missiles and other military hardware.

He said the Israel highhandedness and defiance could be gauged from the fact that its army even bombed a UN office and killed four UN observers. “Such terrorist attacks are being carried out by Israel with full US support,” he added.

The JI leader also referred the Rome conference on the issue where the participants appeared unanimous on ceasefire but the United States sabotaged every move to enable the forum to issue a ceasefire call.
