Donation campaign in S. Arabia

By Our Correspondent

RIYADH, July 26: A campaign began in Saudi Arabia on Wednesday to collect donations for Lebanon’s war victims.

The campaign began with a live transmission made by the government-owned Saudi Television.

The Saudi TV has enlisted the support of religious scholars, sociologists and community leaders to popularise the campaign.

The launch of the initiative was announced at a packed media conference at the OIC headquarters here on Tuesday by Ambassador Atta Mannan Bakheet, assistant secretary-general for international cooperation and OIC spokesman.

“The brutal and inhuman assault in Lebanon has resulted in catastrophic humanitarian disaster.

“Despite continuous calls by the international community Israel is persisting in its aggression and hampering delivery of assistance to the innocent victims,” Mr Bakheet said at the inauguration.

He explained that the OIC, in association with the Islamic Development Bank and the Islamic Chambers of Commerce and Industry, has initiated a large-scale humanitarian campaign.
