COLOMBO, July 26: Sri Lanka’s military carried out air attacks against suspected Tamil Tiger positions in north-eastern Sri Lanka on Wednesday, military officials said.
Jet fighters bombed camps of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) at Maavilaru in the northeast district of Trincomalee, where guerillas had blocked an irrigation canal, Prasad Samarasinghe, spokesman for the defence ministry, said.
“We can confirm that we have carried out several air strikes in that area,” Samarasinghe said, adding that the raids were in support of ground troops deployed to open the waterway to help thousands of farmers in the region.—AFP
